Agentic token economy for cost optimization and revenue sharing

URN C26.5.1028
Topics AI (Artificial Intelligence), Business models, Ecosystem management

Connecting AI agents, optimizing token costs, and enabling revenue sharing across the ecosystem.

This Catalyst introduces a commercial foundation for the emerging agentic economy, where AI agents act not only as service consumers but also as service providers. As organisations deploy increasingly autonomous, interconnected agents, managing token consumption, service usage and economic accountability becomes a critical challenge. The project addresses this gap by creating an Agent Interconnection Platform that transforms token usage from an opaque infrastructure cost into a transparent, measurable and monetisable business asset, enabling organisations to confidently scale multi-agent ecosystems. At the heart of the innovation is a unified approach to token metering, charging and settlement across heterogeneous AI environments. Rather than tracking usage only at individual model endpoints, the platform captures and correlates consumption across agents, models, tools and providers involved in a complete business transaction. This end-to-end visibility provides enterprises with unprecedented operational transparency, enabling accurate cost allocation, improved governance and full traceability from AI task execution through to commercial outcomes. The Catalyst also introduces intelligent cost optimisation capabilities that help organisations balance performance, quality and expenditure. By incorporating cost-aware orchestration, the platform can dynamically select the most appropriate combination of models, cloud resources, edge environments and agent services based on business requirements and service levels. This reduces unnecessary token consumption and infrastructure costs while maintaining agreed performance objectives, creating a more efficient and sustainable approach to AI operations at scale. Beyond operational efficiency, the project unlocks entirely new business models for communications service providers and ecosystem participants. Flexible charging mechanisms, multi-party revenue sharing and SLA-based pricing allow agent capabilities to be commercialised in ways that extend far beyond traditional pay-per-token approaches. Leveraging TM Forum Open Digital Architecture assets and monetisation standards, the Catalyst demonstrates how CSPs can evolve from connectivity providers into trusted orchestrators of agent marketplaces, creating new revenue streams while enabling a scalable, interoperable and economically sustainable ecosystem for autonomous AI services.
